The Best Time to Visit Vilamoura, Month by Month

Anyone reading the climate table books June. The air is warm, the days are the longest, and the crowds have not arrived yet. In the water, the same sum looks different. In Vilamoura, at least four calendars run side by side: the air’s, the water’s, the operators’, and golf’s.

The sea runs about two months behind the air

At the Faro station, the mean daily maximum temperature is 26.8 °C in June and 26.4 °C in September (IPMA, 1991–2020 normal period) — practically the same. In the water off Quarteira, three kilometres from Marina de Vilamoura, ten years of measurements show a different pattern: May 17.7 °C, June 19.3 °C, July 20.6 °C, August 21.1 °C, September 21.0 °C, October still 20.3 °C.

Same air, two degrees’ difference in the water — and those two degrees decide whether everyone jumps in at the swim stop or three people wade in to the knees and turn back. Anyone coming for the swimming is better off with the second half of September than with June. The water temperature does not noticeably drop until November, to 18.4 °C; it reaches its low point in February, at 15.3 °C.

The Nortada does not get going until the afternoon

The summer wind here is a thermal sea breeze: land heats up faster than water, and the equalisation is felt as the Nortada, a wind from the northwest. In the morning it usually blows below 11 km/h; from around 2pm it freshens to 28 to 37 km/h, and by around 4pm it eases off. It occurs most often between May and September, and almost continuously in July and August.

For departures from the marina, that shapes the day. The sea is calmest in the morning, and anyone sensitive to motion should book then. Between 2pm and 4pm the breeze is at its strongest, and many afternoon slots for catamaran tours and the cave tours from Vilamoura fall into that window. The late departures are less exposed, because the sunset cruises set off into a wind field that is already easing. The south coast lies in the lee of the west coast, but “sheltered” does not mean “flat”; what that feels like on board is covered in seasickness in children.

Its counterpart is called the Levante and comes from the east to southeast. Then the cooling sea wind is missing, the days grow more oppressive, and the water benefits: on the eastern Algarve, sustained heat without the Nortada pushes temperatures to 26 to 28 °C. That is because the Nortada pushes warm surface water offshore and lets cold deep water rise, more weakly on the south coast than on the west coast. Without it, the cooling effect is missing in both water and air at once.

The rain falls in late autumn, not in winter

The distribution surprises many people. In Faro, July brings 0.9 mm and August 3.0 mm, September 21.5 mm, October 56.0 mm, November 75.5 mm and December 90.0 mm. So the wettest month is December, not January with 49.3 mm. At the same time, December averages only 7.0 days of rain: a few heavy rainy days between sunny ones. In April and November, simply less is open

The shoulder months rarely fail because of the weather, but mostly because doors are closed. Aquashow Park in Quarteira, on the EN 396, the nearest water park, is open in 2026 from 1 May to 30 September. Aqualand is further out, on the EN 125 near Alcantarilha, 31 km and about half an hour’s drive from the marina; it does not open until June and closes again in mid-September, with the exact dates on the park’s own website. Zoomarine is in Guia, in the Concelho Albufeira, on the N 125 at kilometre 65, 25 km and about 26 minutes’ drive away; without a car, the same route with a change in Albufeira takes over an hour and a half. With its season running from 12 March to 28 November 2026, the park has the longest season of the three and is also the single most reviewed listing in our catalogue (€28.90); the Aqualand ticket costs €23. Both are among the 32 things to do on land, from €6.

On the water it is much the same: one Vilamoura operator states its high season as April to October, daily from 9am to 9pm, and refers winter enquiries to a request-only basis. The official bathing season in the Concelho Loulé is narrower, and is covered in family-friendly beaches.

Golf runs on a completely different calendar

In the Golden Triangle between Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago, the season is turned on its head. For the period from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, Vale do Lobo lists the following green fees for 18 holes: December to March €143, April €173, May and June €191, July and August €155, September and October €148 to €177. The most expensive month is May, the cheapest is high summer, and the reason is the midday heat; that is exactly why twilight rates from 3:30pm exist at all. At Quinta do Lago South, too, July and August count as low season, with March to May and the period from 6 September as high season. October: warm sea, empty beach, thin timetable

Experienced visitors recommend October, and the recommendation has a downside. The water is still at 20.3 °C, the clifftop car parks at Praia da Falésia stand empty, and prices have dropped. At the same time, operators scale back their timetables, and that hits the small categories first: dolphin watching comprises 6 listings from €28, sunset cruises also 6 from €25, water sports only 5 from €40. If a departure there is cancelled, there is no second boat on the same day.

The booking pages usually state the reason explicitly: tours can be cancelled due to poor sea conditions or if the minimum number of participants is not reached, in which case the amount is refunded. In August that clause is theoretical; in October it is not. Anyone staying only a few days is better off scheduling the trip they really want for the second day of the holiday, so a replacement date still remains. With sailing trips, 9 listings from €29.40, the situation is more relaxed; only yacht charter from €585 makes you independent of all this.

August: everything open, everything full

The region’s hotel sector reported occupancy above 90 % for August 2026; the average room rate in the Algarve had risen by 17.5 % up to June, the steepest increase in the country. Add to that the school calendar: the Portuguese 2026/27 school year does not start for pre-school and primary school until between 11 and 15 September, so August also belongs to local families, and the Spanish summer holidays run in parallel. Two short peaks fall outside the season: the Portuguese carnival break lands on 8 to 10 February in 2027, and the Easter break on 22 March to 2 April. The coast is busy then, without the summer infrastructure yet being in place.

Which month is wrong for whom

June is wrong for anyone who comes to swim. The air deceives; the water sits at 19.3 °C, and children notice that faster than adults do. May is wrong for golfers on a budget, because that is exactly the month that is most expensive on the tee. August is wrong for anyone who books spontaneously or wants to eat out in the evening without a reservation. April is wrong for a holiday planned around water parks, because apart from Zoomarine, none of them are open. November and December are wrong for beach days: 75.5 and 90.0 mm of rain respectively, water around 17 to 18 °C, and from 29 November Zoomarine is closed too. And October is wrong for anyone with exactly one tour in mind and only a single date free for it.
